Assignment 1 (40%): Evaluation of the Visual Environment. This assignment requires you to demonstrate an understanding of, and ability to apply, the material from the first three modules. You will analyse the interactions between surfaces and light.
For assignment 1 you will undertake a pretend scenario for a science competition.
Your name is Bob Brown. You are very interested in the interactions of light and surfaces.
In your local news paper there is a notice from your council. The council is holding a science competition as part of their annual science festival. The local paper states the following:
As you may be aware, our annual science festival is rapidly approaching. This years’ competition will celebrate the theme Light and Surfaces. We invite you to enter our competition. Successful participants will obtain a pass or better grade for assignment 1 of the Designing with Surfaces and Light course at the University of Sydney. To successfully participate you will need to complete the following tasks:
Take one photo that shows two interactions of surfaces and light. You can select any two of the following interactions: reflection, transmission, absorption, refraction and/or dispersion.
Copy and paste the photo at the top of your page.
In an essay style format, show your scientific knowledge and understanding of course modules by describing how the two interactions of light are behaving with the surfaces in your image. Do not uses formulas and calculations
Demonstrate your capacity to conduct research by subsequently arguing how your interactions are important to consider when designing in the built environment.
For example, I have chosen to photograph a lake. The interactions I have selected are reflection and transmission. After explaining how these interactions behave scientifically, I conduct research and discover that semi specular reflections are considered to promote the feeling of wealth in retail environments. I consequently use this research to support my argument that reflections are an important consideration when designing retail environments. For transmission I find research that has information about the transmission of light through glass when designing glass houses. I use this research to support my argument that the transmission of light through glass is a significant consideration when housing plants in an interior environment.
Keep in mind that the paragraph above is just and example. Please discover your own built environment where your interactions of surfaces and light are important considerations.
Other hints to keep in mind:
Your photo is illustrative only, your photography skills will not be judged.
Keep your discussion to 750 words (word limit does not include referencing)
Use APA referencing style and double line spacing.
Post any questions you might have on the Discussions page.
